Small Bathroom Changes Can Make an Everyday Difference

Small Bathroom Changes Can Make an Everyday Difference

You don’t always need a full renovation to make your bathroom easier to use. A few thoughtfully chosen safety features can provide support where you need it most—stepping out of the shower, sitting down, or getting up at night.

The need is real. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one in four adults age 65 and older falls each year. That figure covers falls in all settings, not just bathrooms. (cdc.gov)

Bathrooms deserve particular attention. A CDC study using 2008 U.S. data estimated that 234,094 nonfatal bathroom injuries among people ages 15 and older were treated in emergency departments; 81.1% were caused by falls. These are historical findings, not a current annual estimate. (cdc.gov)

A secure place to hold on

Properly installed grab bars provide a dedicated handhold at the tub, shower, or toilet. Placement should match how you move through the room. The CDC’s bathroom injury report identifies grab bars inside and outside bathing areas and beside toilets as changes that may help reduce injuries. (cdc.gov)

The option to sit while showering

A suitable shower chair or bench gives you the option to wash while seated. MedlinePlus, from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, recommends a bath chair or bench as part of bathroom safety guidance. A handheld shower can make seated washing more convenient by bringing the water within reach. (medlineplus.gov)

Better visibility and footing

Safety also includes seeing where you’re going. MedlinePlus recommends good lighting in the bathroom and along the route from the bedroom. The CDC also recommends nonslip strips in tubs and showers. These simple changes address everyday hazards without requiring a complete remodel. (medlineplus.gov, cdc.gov)
